The Avent brand had its beginnings in England in 1984, when Cannon Rubber executive Edward Atkin began to design a better bottle for breast fed babies. Beginning with the bottle nipple, Atkin designed a shape that encourages a wide-open mouth when feeding, just like breast feeding. The Avent Nipple also has a one-way valve to reduce air flow and decrease the risk of colic. Avent also redesigned the tall, thin baby bottle prevalent in those days with a short, wide-necked bottle easier to hold and clean. It also made the bottle more stable and less prone to tipping.
In 1997 Avent introduced the Isis Breast Pump, featuring a patented Let down Massage Cushion™ and a silicone diaphragm, to stimulate a natural let-down and mimic a baby's suckling.
Avent Breast Pumps were the first of its kind to allow expression of breast milk directly into the same bottles that can be used to store and feed. They called this “product integration,” and it continued with the introduction of the Magic Cup sippy cup in 2000 and the VIA system in 2004.
VIA are sturdy, but disposable, containers for breast milk that integrate fully with
Avent Isis breast pumps or the Avent bottle nipples.
In 2003 Avent America Inc. was chosen among thousands of vendors to be the recipient of the “Vendor of the Year” award by Toys ‘R Us. Avent Isis Breast Pumps
were awarded “Best Baby Product” the same year.
Today, Avent is a popular infant feeding system in over 70 countries. They continue to introduce products to their growing line including: bottle warmers, sterilizers, pacifiers, feeding sets, breast pump sets, carrier bags and the Niplette for treating inverted nipples.
